Welford Pocket Park

Welford Pocket Park occupies a crescent shaped piece of land lying at the northern end of the village, alongside the A5199 opposite the Naseby junction. Those of you driving or walking past will have noticed the sign for the park. Northamptonshire County Council has owned the land since the 1980’s and they have agreed to lease it for use as a Pocket Park.

The intention is that the park will act as a mini conservation area with habitats suitable for a variety of wild flowers, plants, insects, birds and animals. As many of you will know the land in that area is boggy in places, so a pond has already been dug and is being kept full by a plentiful supply of rainwater. An area for bog plants has also been cleared.

Away from the pond, at either end of the crescent a selection of native trees has been planted and on the slightly higher ground above the pond a wildflower meadow has been sown. The different areas of the park are linked by a hard path (suitable for wheelchairs and prams), near the fence and away from the road, as well as a winding grass path through the wild flowers and past the pond. Both paths lead down to what is perhaps the most noticeable feature to date, the new footbridge over the River Avon.

If you would like to get involved with the Pocket Park, or find out more about it, or donate seed from wild flowers you have in your garden then please contact the pocket park group.
