Benifice Fifth Sunday Choir to Form

A small group met in Sibbertoft on April 23rd for the inaugural session of the proposed adult choir, who plan to sing at the four or five "Fifth Sundays" that occur each year. The first performance will be on November 30th 2008 and rehearsals are planned for the two preceding Fridays. Anyone interested in joining this group should email the webmaster on - your message will be passed on to the origanisers.

Welford Choral Events update.

On Sunday April 13th, we closed the books on another most successful event, the third in a series of ‘come-and-sing’ performances in the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin in Welford.
On Palm Sunday an informal choir of some 85, some travelling from as far as Cambridge, sang Maunder’s "Olivet to Calvary" with obvious pleasure and to a remarkable standard, given that many of them had not sung the work before and with only a few hours rehearsal. Sometimes seen as excessively sentimental for today’s musical tastes, this work tells of the last few days in the life of Christ through a mixture of solo, choral and congregational parts.
The event raised £430 from contributions by the choristers with a further £150 being taken on the collection plate on the day. A cheque for £430 was presented to the treasurer of the PCC on Sunday April 13th.
We are most grateful to Alan Barraclough for his musical leadership and as our conductor. We extend our thanks to John Lenton, organist, and to our two soloists Brian Cookson (Tenor) and Trevor Hazlewood (Bass) for their invaluable contributions. We would also like to thank various members of the Parish who provided refreshments for the choir members in the Community Hall.

After this highly successful "Come & Sing" performance of Maunders Olivet to Calvary on Palm Sunday 16th March 2008, we are now planning next years event for Palm Sunday the 5th of April 2009. Included in the programme will be the Eastertide elements of Handel's Messiah.
