WELFORD ACTION
GROUP
Who
or what is Welford?
Welford is a beautiful,
historic village in the centre of England. On the borders between Northamptonshire
and Leicestershire, Welford has been a thriving community for many centuries:
evidence of Roman occupation, mention in the Doomsday Book, a fine Norman church
and evidence of pre-battle activity before the conflict at Naseby, a village just
two miles away.
Most significantly in recent
years, Welford sits just to the north of Junction 1 of the A14 on what was the
main A50 between Northampton and Leicester. Now downgraded to the A5199 the main
road through the village is an unfortunate cut through between the A14 and the
M1 at Junction 20 (Lutterworth/Rugby). Our High Street is narrow and lined with
the parked cars of residents who are limited to off-road parking as many of the
listed buildings have no driveways. In many places, large vehicles cannot pass
each other without mounting the pavement. Given this information one would imagine
that every care would be taken by the local authorities and the Highways Agency
to prevent any risk to buildings and villagers. Sadly this has not been the case!
Action
Group
In November 2002 a public
meeting was called by local residents who had experienced a devastating weekend
of disruption and sleepless nights and physical danger when the Highways Agency
closed the A14 for repairs. As a result of the anger and outrage of the people
at the meeting an action group was created to prevent this situation ever happening
again.
Aims
Mission: To focus on traffic problems affecting the safety of Welford residents
and work towards solving them.
